The 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is one of the most prolific Malaysian politicians that the country has ever had. Fondly known as Pak Lah, or Uncle Abdullah, Badawi has held important positions during his active years. He served as the chairman of the ASEAN, Non Aligned Movement and Organisation of the Islamic Conference. Additionally, he also held the chair of the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia before being elected as the 5th Prime Minister. For his relentless service to the nation, he has been conferred with the title of ‘Tun’ by his majesty Mizan Zainal Abidin. To know more on the life and career of this ace politician, read through the following lines.

Childhood & Early Life

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was born in Kampung Perlis, Bayan Lepas, Penang in a highly religious family.

He studied at the Bukit Mertajam High School, post which he was educated at MBS (Methodist Boy's School) Penang for his 6th form.

After receiving his education, Badawi enrolled himself at the University of Malaya. He graduated from the same with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Studies in 1964.

Career

Post graduation, Badawi joined the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Corps, where he served as the Director of Youth at the Ministry of Youth and Sport as well as secretary of the National Operations Council (MAGERAN).

Badawi resigned from the same to become the Member of Parliament for his constituency of Kepala Batas in northern Seberang Perai in 1978.

In 1988, the then prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad elected Badawi as the Vice President of the newly established UMNO. In 1990, he retained his position as the Vice President, after which he was brought back to the position of Foreign Minister in the Cabinet, a position he held until 1999.

Despite losing the office of the Vice President in 1993, he remained in the Cabinet and was chosen as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Before 1998, Badawi held various profile at the Prime Minister’s office, such as Minister of Education, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On completion of his probation and dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim, Badawi was elected as Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia (1999-2003) and Minister of Home Affairs. Simultaneously, he also held the position of the President of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

During his term in the office of the Prime Minister, Badawi resolved to bring down corruption. He even prophesized an interpretation of Islam, known as Islam Hadhari, according to which he advocated inter-compatibility between Islam and the economic and technological development.

Badawi also focused on internal security against corrupt practices. Additionally, he gave a lot of importance to the foreign policy making. For his work, Badawi was popularly referred to as “Pak Lah” (Uncle Lah) by the people of the country.

He kept the crucial finance portfolio with him under which he released his maiden budget that was mostly maintenance oriented, a sharp contrast from growth policies emphasised by Mahathir, his predecessor.

Badawi advocated new economic policies according to which, instead of foreign investments, government contracts and privatization, agriculture and biotechnology was promoted.

It was under Badawi’s administration that Malaysia and Japan went under the free trade agreement, under which the two countries were able to scrap tariffs essentially on all industrial goods and most agricultural, forestry and fishery products.

In 2008, Badawi contested and won the Prime Ministerial election twice in a row. He yet again kept the finance portfolio with him, and distributed the rest amongst his 68-member Cabinet. However, political crisis from both opposition and his party members led to his stepping down from the Prime Ministerial position and as a President of UMNO.
