Amarins Wierdsma, born in 1991 to conductor Oane Wierdsma and clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite, began playing the violin at the age of two. After studying with Coosje Wijzenbeek and Vera Beths in the Netherlands she is now pursuing an Artist Diploma at the Guildhall School of Music and drama with David Takeno, having completed her Master’s degree there with distinction.
Amarins has taken part in many masterclasses including the International Music Seminar Prussia Cove, The International Holland Music Sessions, London Masterclasses, Keshet Eilon, and Imuse Enghien among many others. She is also lucky to have been invited to participate in the East Neuk Festival in Fife and Open Chamber Music Prussia Cove.
In April 2013 Amarins was awarded the third prize at the Dutch national violin competition Oskar Back. The jury complimented her on her large stage presence and personality and on her interesting playing full of temperament and spirit.
Other prizes include first prizes during the Iordens Viooldagen, the Davina van Wely violin competition and the Princess Christina Competition and the Young Music Talent of the Year prize of the Netherlands.
In October 2012 Amarins Was awarded the Kersjes Scholarship, a Dutch scholarship awarded to a promising young violinist or violist every year.
Amarins is the first violinist of the London based Barbican String Quartet. The Quartet is part of the ProQuartet Scheme in Paris and the Belcea Quartet Scheme. They have taken part in IMS Prussia Cove, where they worked with Rita and Ferenc Rados. Upcoming performances include recitals at Wigmore hall, supported and organized by the Musicians Company and Masie Lewis Trust and a residency at Aldeburgh where they will work with Günther Pichler. Amarins is not only very active as a chamber musician , she has also performed as soloist with orchestra in concertos by Bruch, Bach, Vivaldi, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Sibelius among others. During the final of the Oskar Back competition she was the soloist with the orchestra of the conservatory of Amsterdam in Brahms’ violin concerto.
After winning the Westbourne Concerto Competition this fall, Amarins performed Brahms’ violin concerto twice in Bournemouth this summer. Upcoming concert appearances include concertos by Mendelssohn and Prokofiev among others.
In April of the year 2011 Amarins went on tour with pianist Didel Bish and soprano, Nikki Treurniet, to The United States on invitation of the Netherlands-America Foundation. Amarins traveled to Porto, Portugal twice. Once with her piano trio, Strings Attached, and in 2015 with the Barbican String Quartet to represent the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama at Harmos Festival. Representing the International Holland Music Sessions, Amarins performed together with Victor Alsén and Ole Christian Hagenrud for the Dutch Queen Beatrix in March 2013.
Together with Sophiko Simsive, piano, Amarins went on a tour to Indonesia, organized by the Dutch Erasmus Huis and she has recently been selected for the TIHMS Masters on Tour, bringing her to the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Bratislava Concert halls in May 2017 with Edward Liddall playing the piano. Amarins has participated in masterclass from many musicians , including Herman Krebbers, Gyorgy Pauk, Mark Lubotski, Emmy Verhey, Philippe Graffin, David Takeno, Krzysztof Wegrzyn, Petru Munteanu, Patinka Kopec, Mi-Kyung Lee, Isabelle van Keulen, Gerhard Schulz, Nikolaj Znaider, Viviane Hagner, Ferenc Rados, Andras Keller, Pierre Amoyal, Ivry Gitlis and Anner Bijlsma, from whom she often receives lessons on works by J. S. Bach. Amarins plays on a violin which she has on loan from the National Music instrument foundation.
(1991) Dochter van dirigent Oane Wierdsma en Klarinettiste Nancy Braithwaite, begon op tweejarige leeftijd met vioolspelen. Van 1996 tot 2009 studeerde ze bij Coosje Wijzenbeek, van 2009-2013 bij Vera Beths aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Haar Bachelor aan het Cva ronde Amarins Cum Laude af. Na het behalen van haar Master (met Distinction) aan de Guildhall School of Music, studeert zij nu aan dezelfde school voor haar Artist Diploma.
Amarins nam deel aan cursussen zoals: International Music Seminar Prussia Cove, Het Orlando Festival, Kloster shöntal Het Peter de Grote Festival, Londen Masterclasses, Academy Lausanne, Keshet Eilon, Imuse Enghien, The International Holland Music Sessions en Masterclasses Apeldoorn. Tijdens het Peter de Grote festival ontving zij in de zomer van 2009 de Lamberte-hoedemaker prijs. Ook is ze onlangs uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music en het East Neuk festival in Fife
Amarins won 1e prijzen bij de Iordens viooldagen in Den Haag en het Davina van Wely Vioolconcours. In december 2007 werd zij benoemd tot Jong Muziektalent Nederland tijdens het Nationale Concours van de Stichting Jong Muziektalent Nederland. In 2009 won zij een 3e prijs tijdens de Nationale Finale van het Prinses Christina Concours en in december 2012 werd de Kersjes Beurs aan haar toegekend. Als kamermusicus won zij o.a. prijzen bij het Orlando Concours en recentelijk met het Barbican Kwartet, waar zijn de primarius van is, de St James Quartet Prize 2015 en met haar Morisot piano trio het Cavatina kamermuziek concours.
Tijdens de finale van het Oskar Back vioolconcours werd aan Amarins de derde prijs toegekend. De jury complimenteerde haar met haar temperamentvolle spel en haar grote podiumpersoonlijkheid.
Amarins is de primarius van het Barbican Strijkkwartet, waarmee ze in 2015 tijdens het Harmos Festival de Guildhall School of Music vertegenwoordigde en op uitwisseling ging naar het Mozarteum Salzburg. Het Kwartet studeert momenteel bij het Belcea Quartet, mogelijk gemaakt door het Belcea Quartet Trust en volgt masterclasses by ProQuartet in Frankrijk. Met eerdere ensembles trad ze ze o.a. op in het Concertgebouw Amsterdam en tijdens het Internationaal Kamermuziek Festival Utrecht. Ook soleerde Amarins tijdens dit festival samen met Eva van Haaften, Rosanne Philipens en Janine Jansen in het concert voor 4 violen van Vivaldi. Als solist met orkest speelde Amarins vioolconcerten van o.a. Bruch, Vivaldi, Bach, Mendelssohn en Dvorak. Ook soleerde Amarins tijdens de finale van het Oskar Back concours in de grote zaal van het Concertgebouw samen met het orkest van het conservatorium van Amsterdam in het vioolconcert van Johannes Brahms. Later dit jaar zal zij in Londen en Nederland vioolconcerten van Brahms, Prokofiev en Mendelssohn ten gehore brengen.
Amarins is verkozen tot één van de New Master’s on Tour, georganiseerd door de International Holland Music Sessions. Deze Tour vindt plaats in mei 2017 en brengt haar naar Bratislava en het Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
Amarins maakte samen met Pianiste Didel Bish en Zangeres Nikki Treurniet een tour voor de Netherlands-America Foundation door de Verenigde Staten. In maart 2013 speelde Amarins samen met Victor Alsén en Ole Christian Hagenrud voor Koningin Beatrix.
In Januari 2016 ging ze samen met pianiste Sophiko Simsive op tournee naar Indonesia op uitnodiging van het Erasmus huis.
Amarins speelt op een viool, die ze in bruikleen heeft van het Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds. Tijdens masterclasses ontving zij lessen van o.a. Ivry Gitlis, David Takeno, Philippe Grafin, Herman Krebbers, Gyorgy Pauk, Isabelle van Keulen, Gerhard Schulz, Pierre Amoyal, Nikolaj Znaider, Ferenc Rados, Krzysztof Wegrzyn en Andras Keller.
